Classes and Workshops

Power of Birth offers several classes and workshops designed for small groups. Our average class size is between 3-10 people. We encourage you to curl up on our couches and explore labor and birth with your instructor. Our classes are truly tailored to the needs of the participants and will allow time to answer your questions.

Childbirth Preparation Classes in New York City

Childbirth Prep ClassesChildbirth preparation classes cover basic anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, labor and birth.   We teach labor comfort techniques and discuss  the emotional and physical challenges facing new parents. The class will discuss what normal birth looks like and will practice pain coping comfort measures.  You will graduate with a true understanding of birth and a greater trust of the birthing process.  Partners are welcome to attend.  $475.00

Childbirth Preparation classes either meet in the evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 for a four evening class series or a twelve hour weekend intensive. Private Classes are also available. Registration now open for the following classes:

Breastfeeding and Baby Care Class

Our Breastfeeding and Baby Care classes offer basic breastfeeding and newborn care information.  Discussion covers what to expect and how to care for your newborn during the first few weeks of life.  We also talk about the first few weeks postpartum for the entire family. Class price is $150 Topics covered include: 

  • Transition into parenthood with real life advice about the first few weeks postpartum
  • Cord care
  • Circumcision risks and benefits
  • BurpingSoothing skills
  • DiaperingTemperature taking
  • BathingSwaddling
  • Benefits of Breastfeeding
  • Correct latch instruction and explanation
  • What to expect physically and emotionally before and after your milk comes in
  • How to know when to feed your baby
  • Strategies to set yourself up for successful breastfeeding and how to avoid complications

Fertility Group

Co led by a mental health professional and a childbirth educator, the infertility support group offered at Power of Birth provides women a safe and nurturing environment to share the pressures and hopes of planning to be parents. Women can share their own stories, hear how others are managing, and learn techniques for coping effectively.

Fertility Group Meets for 8 weeks for 1.5 hrs each week. $595.00

Breastfeeding Circle (Drop In)

Breastfeeding Circles meet every Tuesday from 1-3pm.  Drop in to discuss breastfeeding with other moms, facilitated by a lactation consultant.  You can practice nursing in new settings and receive the most up to date information on breastfeeding. 

Every Tuesday from 1pm-3pm with Kate Sharp IBCLC. *No registration required.

Colic Clinic (Drop In)

A one hour meeting for parents and their babies with colic. While acknowledging the emotional difficulties of dealing with a crying baby, we will also provide tools to help with the sleep disturbances, feeding problems, and family disruption associated with caring for a baby with colic. Under the guidance of Barry Lester from Rhode Island’s Colic Clinic and the author of “Why is My Baby Crying?, the facilitator will not only listen to and assess the needs of your family, but also show you tips and tricks that will help the family survive (and even enjoy) those first challenging months. The group will be lead by a certified childbirth educator, doula and mother of two babies who had colic.

24 hour on-call service is provided for those who
attend.

VBAC Class

Participants will have an opportunity to review past birth experiences and to discuss what they would like to change or keep the same. We will explore the importance of provider support for VBAC and learn and practice coping and communication skills for working with labor and common VBAC protocols. Attending this class is a great way to connect with families that may have had similar experiences.

Class is a one day weekend class (about 6 hours)

Refresher Childbirth Prep Class

This class is for those who would like to revisit labor basics and consider a new approach for the next birth experience. Participants will have the opportunity to share about their previous births and discuss what worked well and their vision for change. We will learn and practice comfort measures and techniques and discuss how second and subsequent labors/births are different from first ones. We will also explore what physical changes to expect during the postpartum course. Preparing siblings of various ages and helping the family adjust to the newest addition will be emphasized.

Expectant Moms Group "Expectations"

Come connect with with other pregnant women. This group is meant to establish connections with other women who may be experiencing similar joys and struggles throughout her pregnancy. Each series is led by its participants interests ...But common topics that we discuss include:

* How my life will change once baby arrives
* Staying in touch with your physical/emotional self
* Resources for pregnant moms and the first few weeks with your baby
* Why is taking a childbirth education class important
* How to surround yourself with support during and after labor
* How to prepare your home for a baby
* Advocating for your needs with your medical team
* How to filter advice from others
* Identifying anxieties and fears around pregnancy/labor and how to let them go

The group will focus around these topics, but will also be open for your areas of interest as well. For more information, or to register, please call or email us. $150.00
